Identity is a centre of narrative gravity, a matrix consisting of memories, thoughts, feelings, emotions and sensations woven into narratives that speak about us. These narratives, created by environment, culture, and the interaction between the two, arrive in our consciousness as a story that, in many ways, has already been written. The formation of these stories is influenced by many factors, and these stories can be supportive or harmful to our mental health. Analysing and editing these stories thus becomes a central component of psychotherapy. In the therapeutic process I focus on the here-and-now, to counteract a neural bias, where the brain tries to automatically focus towards "what is to come in the future" - which is nothing more than a survival strategy encoded in our brain. These strategies carry forward our past in a way that determines our present experiences and sets a trajectory for the future. Like "black holes" they are never seen, but only known by the effects of their gravity on other celestial bodies. It is imperative for me to see beyond symptoms and diagnostic codes, to be able to see the person, in their individuality. I use a multidisciplinary approach and I am guided by the (neuro)scientist-practitioner model, which gives me the opportunity to deeply understand the cases that I deal with in my practice.
